CHS 101 - Introduction to Community Health Sciences (3 units) Introduction to basic terminology, concepts, and strategies of public and community health.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. define basic terms associated with public and community health (e.g., primary and secondary prevention, epidemic and endemic, communicable and chronic disease). 2. describe how the socio-ecological theory provides a framework for analyzing public health problems and solutions. 3. describe the historical context in which our current public health system evolved. 4. identify the organizations and agencies that oversee the different core areas of public health, including infectious disease, occupational health, environmental health, chronic disease, and injury. 5. describe the basic legal powers of public health agencies and officials. 6. recognize examples of how policy and legislation has influenced health behaviors and health outcomes. 7. describe real-world examples (both past and present) of public/community health problems and intervention strategies.
