CHS 709 - Epidemiologic Research Design and Planning (3 units) Epidemiological concepts and methods in the context of developing skills in general epidemiological study design and proposal writing.
Corequisite(s): CHS 712 .
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Spring
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. compare the different measurement scales and the implications for selection of statistical methods to be used based on these distinctions. 2. evaluate a public health problem in terms of magnitude, person, time, and place. 3. assess basic ethical and legal principles pertaining to the collection, maintenance, use and dissemination of epidemiologic data. 4. assess causal inference and hypothesis testing. 5. analyze the purposes, strengths, and weaknesses of various study designs. 6. investigate random error and systematic error (bias). 7. investigate whether confounding and/or effect modification is present. 8. develop effective written and oral skills for communicating with different audiences in the context of professional public health activities. 9. develop the tasks necessary to assure that program/study implementation occurs as intended. 10. develop a program budget with justification. 11. compose goals, measurable objectives, related activities, and expected outcomes for a research proposal.
