ENG 340 - Myth and Archetype

Modes of relationship between mythic patterns and literary expression.

Prerequisite(s): Two from CH 201 CH 202  or CH 212 , CH 203 ; Junior or Senior standing.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. articulate the premises and assumptions of different theoretical approaches to the study of myths as the “sacred narratives” of peoples.
2. explain and assess ideas associated with the widespread patterns of recurring motifs within myth traditions.
3. describe and compare the cultural significance of the trickster figure in the traditional narratives of African, Native American, European, and Asian peoples.
4. describe and analyze people’s expression of social values within their traditioanl tales of “cultural heroes.
5. explain and evaluate the etiological purposes served by traditional accounts of the creation and destruction of the world.
