ENG 435A - Milton (3 units) Intensive study of Milton’s poetry and selected prose.
Prerequisite(s): ENG 303 or Junior standing.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. write lucid, well-constructed arguments analyzing and interpreting texts. 2. analyze Milton’s major works in their cultural and historical contexts, and to discuss Milton’s place in the political and intellectual history of England. 3. identify the distinctive features of Milton’s poetry and to discuss Milton’s influence on later English poetry. 4. discuss Milton’s use of Biblical sources, and his use of figures, motifs, and generic conventions from classical literature, in his own lyrics, epics, and dramas. 5. discuss the major critical takes on Milton’s Paradise Lost.
