Writers in prose and poetry in England from about 1603 to 1660, excluding Shakespeare and Milton, e.g., Donne, Jonson, Herbert, Herrick.

Prerequisite(s): ENG 303  or Junior standing.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. write lucid, well-constructed arguments analyzing and interpreting texts.
2. analyze seventeenth-century poems, plays, and prose in their cultural and historical contexts.
3. articulate the premises and assumptions of different critical approaches and apply them to literature using literary-critical vocabulary.
4. analyze key issues and ideas that shaped seventeenth-century culture.
