NRES 400 - International Issues for Water Development (3 units) CO11, CO13 Evaluates the integration of science, technology, culture, policy, and economics in international issues of water use and development. (GEOG 400 and NRES 400 are cross-listed; credit may be earned in one of the two.)
Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed; at least 3 courses from CO4-CO8 completed; Junior or Senior standing.
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall - Even Years
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. apply (in writing) the appropriate metrics and language as well as evaluate the context of several different water-related situations common throughout the world. 2. compare (through discussion) how water use and management around the world are influenced by cultural dynamics, economic systems, political organization, technological changes, and scientific understandings. 3. synthesize materials and construct a persuasive argument (in writing, through discussion, and in an oral conference-style presentation) about a contemporary water issue of international importance. 4. explain (in writing and through discussion), the history, parties, uncertainties, strategies, mechanisms, and future prospects for a current international water treaty. 5. examine and assess information (in writing) about how social equity, cultural norms, security considerations, and/or the time scale of problem evolution influence decision-making about water in various parts of the world.
