SPA 320 - Phonetics (3 units) Practical course in the science of speech sounds with emphasis on transcription of the International Phonetic Alphabet.
Corequisite(s): SPA 201 .

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. explain how clinical phonetics as a branch of applied phonetics. 2. explain the following terminology: phonetics, dialects, registers, and idiolects, the system of speech production. 3. interpret the International Phonetic Alphabet when transcribing. 4. identify/describe the sounds of American English using classification systems. 5. accurately transcribe isolated and connected speech using the IPA. 6. recognize and apply special symbols and diacritics. 7. demonstrate ability to read phonetic transcription.
