PSC 601G - Political Campaigns & Elections (3 units) Focusing on electoral politics, covering electoral systems, campaign strategy, the effects (or non-effects) of campaigns on citizens, voting, and elections at the national, state, and local levels.
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall - Even Years
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. recognize of the basic tenants of the key concepts in the study of campaigns and elections. 2. evaluate evidence and arguments used in scholarly sources to summarize current thought on the topic being investigated. 3. use advanced search strategies in library research databases and tools to find primary and secondary sources for a presentation or essay. 4. acquire and employ a conceptual framework that will allow them to interpret the meaning of campaign events and election outcomes. 5. create complex research questions or problems in clear thesis statements. 6. identify the key debates in the study of campaigns and elections; utilize relevant concepts and approaches to systematize their analysis of campaign strategy; and thus analyze electoral politics in the U.S. 7. conduct original research in the context of prior literature, demonstrating an understanding of the discipline’s scope and methods.
