PAS 730 - General Surgery Clerkship (5 units) Second-year PA students will advance their knowledge of surgical disease and enhance their ability to comprehensively recognize and manage surgical problems encountered in the surgical patient.
Units of Internship/Practicum: 5 Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. demonstrate appropriate communication and professional interaction with patients, families and other healthcare professionals. 2. discuss the interprofessional roles of the surgical team in the providing of supervised care of assigned surgical patients. 3. conduct preoperative and postoperative evaluation and treatments of surgical patients. 4. recognize and diagnose surgical emergencies, formulate a comprehensive, prioritized differential diagnosis and then determine whether the patient is a good surgical candidate, based on his or her coexisting medical/surgical problems. 5. present a surgical and critical care patient on rounds using professional medical terminology. 6. document admission orders, daily progress or “soap” notes, preoperative, postoperative and critical care notes. 7. describe and identify the common postoperative surgical complications.
