Origin and historical development of cities; world survey of cities today; city site, situation and functions with emphasis on American examples. Field trip.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. discuss and compare among the concepts and ideas of city, urban, suburban, exurban and metropolitan.
2. describe and analyze the development of multi-centered urbanization, and contrast this with conventional understandings of ‘sprawl.’
3. analyze urban phenomena, through explorations in the field, and in textual and visual media.
