IS 477 - Data Communications (3 units) Concepts and terminology of data communication, including equipment protocols, architectures, transmission alternatives, the communication environment, regulatory issues, and hands-on work in operating and maintaining networks.
Prerequisite(s): IS 201 ; IS 350 or CS 135 ; Business major or minor.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. articulate OSI and TCP/IP data communications models, the functions at each layer and the equipment and protocols that enable data communication across the protocol stack. 2. use tools like Wireshark and ARP to examine and troubleshoot data packets. 3. design and manage a small local area network using appropriate configuration (physical topology, logical topology, access methods and media). 4. assess and monitor wireless networks, wireless access points, and network bandwidth. 5. develop specific and reasonable plans to secure networked communications environments by identifying assets, threats, vulnerabilities and describing appropriate network controls and protective measures. 6. evaluate and apply mechanisms for monitoring, controlling, troubleshooting and reporting network performance in order to ensure network communications occur as intended.
