MIL 402 - Leadership in a Complex World

(3 units)
Transition from cadet to lieutenant; property accountability principles; platoon leader capstone exercise; preparation for entering service. Field trip and physical training required.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. The learning objectives for this Course is for Cadets receive and understand essential information on their last semester of their ROTC career; understand the definition, purpose and contents of an effective battle analysis; understand the Army’s approach to specific strategic challenges; understand the Army’s approach to specific tactical challenges; understand the elements and characteristics of an operational environment and how leaders must account for these; discuss the Decisive Action Training Environment, its characteristics and components, as well as the value in training forces in Unified Land Operations; describe the levels and components of culture, factors influencing culture, obstacles to cultural understanding, cultural sensitivity, and the impacts of culture on military operations; describe cultural property, the rules and laws which govern the protection of cultural property and its impact on military operations; understand the offense as a component of Unified Land operations; understand the defense as a component of Unified Land operations; understand the defining characteristics of stability and Defense Support of Civil Authorities and how these operations are supported by the Army; engage with a combat leader and analyze the account of their experience in Unified Land Operations; analyze the use of the principles of war (Joint Operations) as they relate to a historical battle; understand the dynamics of battle, especially those factors and the human dimension which interact to produce victory and/or defeat; understand the knowledge and skills that will allow them to research, develop and deliver an effective decision briefing; understand their Basic Officer Leader Course (BOLC B) requirements after their pre-commissioning training is completed; understand what is expected of him/her as they take over a platoon; evaluate techniques and understand methods that cultivate an effective Officer - NCO relationship that supports mutual development; understand the methods to build the appropriate professional relationships with the NCO’s and Soldiers in your unit; understand their responsibilities to take leader actions to promote a resilient mindset that promotes healthy mental, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being, conducive to individual and collective reactions to high stress environments; understand the intent and the dimensions of the Army’s Comprehensive Soldier Fitness Program (CSF2); understand the programs and resources available to them through Army Community Services (ACS); understand the Army’s imperative for officer leaders to develop others; develop awareness for the accountability of property issued to a using unit; develop maintenance awareness to prepare for achieving and sustaining the Army Maintenance Standard; understand and practice effective command at the platoon level; understand the differences between a leader’s internal and external span of control and how to leverage their competencies for expanding influence beyond the traditional span of control; engage with a combat leader or panel of combat leaders (platoon leaders and platoon NCOs) and analyze the account of their mission command experience; and develop and deliver an effective decision briefing.
