PHIL 327 - History of Political Thought I (3 units) Analytical and critical survey of political theories from the classical period to the present.
Units of Lecture: 3 Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. demonstrate understanding of major questions and debates in the early history of political thought in the western tradition, such as: “What makes a thought ‘political’?”, “What is the relationship between truth and politics?”, “Is there such a thing as a just society?”, “What is the relationship between politics, the family, and religion?”; and “What does ‘nature’ have to do with politics?”. 2. critically read and analyze the major works of Plato, Aristotle, and Machiavelli. 3. utilize the theories of Plato, Aristotle, and Machiavelli to understand contemporary political issues.
