JOUR 320 - Social Journalism (3 units) Apply theories of community engagement and networked communication to the use of social media for journalistic purposes.
Prerequisite(s): Journalism major or minor.
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall and Spring
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. develop data narratives; find stories in data; find data to support stories. 2. demonstrate community engagement skills using a wide variety of social media. 3. report on public issues using social media as well as citizen generated content and other reporting techniques. 4. edit and aggregate stories, comments and social media updates in meaningful ways. 5. demonstrate understanding of the values of verification and transparency and how to practice them in journalism. 6. demonstrate familiarity with tools for measuring engagement.
