SPA 756 - Augmentative & Alternative Communication Speech-Language Pathology

(2 units)
Augmentative & alternative communication (AAC) processes, assessment, devices/tools, and language systems in addition to speech and language intervention with AAC across the lifespan. This course is specific to Speech-Language Pathologists.

Prerequisite(s): Must be an admitted degree seeking student in the Speech Pathology and Audiology masters program.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. identify populations of individuals who might need AAC services and describe their characteristics.
2. demonstrate knowledge of current practice issues as related to AAC.
3. explain the various aspects of AAC and utilize appropriate terminology.
4. determine when AAC options are appropriate.
5. identify major areas of AAC assessment, describe appropriate procedures, determine when referrals are needed.
6. discuss intervention issues and identify critical elements of AAC intervention programs and apply that information to individuals with various AAC needs.
7. demonstrate use of AAC technology, including basic functions of AAC devices and software.
8. explain the role of the AAC user and family/caregivers in the AAC assessment and intervention process.
9. describe the funding process for AAC and identify potential funding sources for AAC services and devices/equipment.
10. describe populations who traditionally require AAC.
11. discuss symbol systems, including aided or unaided, acoustic, graphic, tactile or tangible.
12. describe the relationship between AAC, language, and communication.
13. describe the relationship of AAC to the broader field of communication.
14. identify ethical dilemmas in AAC service provision and discuss strategies for dealing with ethical challenges.
15. explore research in the field of AAC, including understanding the challenges and applications of research principles to evidenced-based clinical practice in the area of AAC.
