EL 769 - Reform and Innovation in Higher Education (3 units) An examination of historical trends and the present-day impetus for restructuring the form and function of US colleges and universities, including governance, curriculum, and methods of instruction.
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. critically apply theory and research-based assessment to current and past instances of higher education reform efforts and strategies for innovation. 2. analyze, in discussion and argumentative essays, the ways in which the form and function of higher education are challenged by reform and defended by reactive forces. 3. conduct their own empirical analyses of ongoing reforms and innovations in higher education institutions. 4. apply their knowledge and analysis to promoting the cause of higher education reform, pushing back against it, or holding it at arm’s length – however they see fit – while continuing to perceive and interpret its patterns and manifestations.
