EL 778 - Marketing and Promotion in Intercollegiate Athletics

(3 units)
This course is an overview of marketing and promotion operations in athletics administration. It will examine athletic facilities, sports finance, event management, fundraising and capital campaigns, corporate sponsorship’s, communications, and ticketing.

Grading Basis: Graded

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. discuss the development of standards and their role in facility design, construction, and operation.
2. discuss financing, budgeting and marketing for athletic facilities, programs, and events.
3. discuss the critical nature of raising funds for athletic organizations.
4. distinguish and explain various aspects of athletic fundraising, including planned giving, endowment campaigns, capital campaigns, annual fund and major gift fundraising, and booster club organization structure.
5. discuss corporate-sport relationships, sport sponsorship-linked marketing, and the special forms of sponsorship (endorsement, licensing, and naming rights).
6. analyze issues involved with sport fundraising activities and recognize the personnel involved with sport fundraising.
7. demonstrate knowledge of sport event management and demonstrate the ability to “brand” an event.
8. articulate the basic components of sports marketing.
9. demonstrate knowledge of the ticket sales process and the various ticketing systems.
