EL 775 - Leadership in Athletic Administration

(3 units)
Study intercollegiate athletics program operations and administration. Learn key functions and examine athletics specific leadership/management processes.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. discuss the basic philosophy and operating principles of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
2. discuss NCAA governance and understand the two major components of rules compliance: institutional control and rules education.
3. discuss the multitude of external pressures and/or influences that shape intercollegiate athletics.
4. discuss the complexities of managing athletic contests, especially responsibilities surrounding pre-event preparation, in-event assignments, and post-event duties.
5. discuss the primary issues involved in the remodeling or design of new athletic facilities.
6. demonstrate a working knowledge of facility management issues, including funding policies, operations, maintenance, and scheduling.
7. discuss the consumer’s decision making process and its impact on developing a sports marketing plan.
8. discuss the principal elements of athletics development.
9. demonstrate a fundamental understanding of Title IX as a federal regulation, and the basic concepts of its 13 program areas.
10. demonstrate an understanding of the basic processes engaged in recruiting, hiring, retaining, developing and releasing personnel.
11. demonstrate an understanding of the leadership/managerial process and the skills and attributes required to be an effective athletics administrator.
12. demonstrate critical thinking skills in making socially responsible and ethical decisions in handling issues and problems confronting athletics administrators.
13. discuss the potential options available to meet the student-athletes needs in terms of enrichment and support services.
14. demonstrate an understanding of the field of athletics administrators and the wide range of career opportunities that exist within the profession.
15. discuss the major issues confronting athletics administrators.
