PHAR 320 - General Principles of Drug Action

Introduction to the chemistry and biochemistry of drugs used in clinical medicine. The molecular pharmacology of small molecules that act on receptors in the major organ systems of the human body.

Prerequisite(s): BIOL 192 ; CHEM 241  or CHEM 341 . Recommended Preparation: PHAR 210.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. describe the basic chemistry and biochemistry of drugs used in clinical medicine.
2. quantitatively define the terms absorption, distribution, metabolism, elimination and toxicity as applied to drugs used in experimental biology and medicine.
3. explain the molecular pharmacology of small molecules that act on receptors in the major organ systems of the human body.
