MATH 743 - Homotopy Theory (3 units) Introduction to the basic techniques of homotopy theory, with applications to topology and geometry. Properties and computations involving higher homotopy groups; the general theory of fibrations and fiber bundles.
Maximum units a student may earn: 3
Prerequisite(s): MATH 731; MATH 741. Corequisite(s): MATH 742.
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 units: 150-minutes per week X 15 weeks Offered: Every Spring - Odd Years
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. perform basic computations of homotopy groups via the Homotopy Excision Theorem. 2. compute homotopy groups via the long exact sequence associated to a Serre fibration. 3. characterize obstructions to lifting and extension problems in topology via Postnikov towers and obstruction classes.
