EL 742 - Understanding Minority Serving Institutions (3 units) This class will examine the development, evolution, institutional contexts, and outcomes of Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) in higher education. Students will learn to characterize and evaluate MSIs based on their student populations, funding, politics, and other relevant issues.
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. analyze and discuss the development and evolution of Minority Serving Institutions in the context of American higher education. 2. describe, analyze, and discuss the characteristics, contexts, funding schemes, politics, and experiences of various populations at Minority Serving Institutions (i.e., students, faculty, administrators) and articulate how these shape our broader understanding of higher education access, success, and policy-making. 3. apply their knowledge and analysis of the theory, research, policies, practice, and institutional contexts of Minority Serving Institutions, through original research papers and presentations.
