PSC 407D - Political Systems of the Middle East and North Africa (3 units) CO13 Explores the Middle East and North Africa region through the lens of comparative politics. Includes basic facts about the region and major questions that social scientists still grapple with around the world.
Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed; at least 3 courses from CO4-CO8 completed; Junior or Senior standing; PSC 211 or PSC 231 .
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall - Even Years
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. in a quiz, identify the countries of the Middle East and North Africa. 2. in exams and essays, classify the political systems and democratic prospects of several countries. 3. in discussion and short writing assignments, apply theories of comparative politics to compare and contrast the political economy of countries in the region. 4. for papers and discussion, summarize academic articles and policy briefs on the region. 5. analyze the origins of unrest, instability, and revolution in the region. 6. appraise policy alternatives as provided by the United States, International Organizations, Local Governments, and Think Tanks.
