PAS 740 - Inpatient Internal Medicine/Hospitalist/Geriatric Clerkship (5 units) Second-year PA students will interact with multi-disciplinary teams to advance their knowledge and clinical skills to manage high-acuity, acutely ill, hospital-based medical and surgical patients.
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Internship/Practicum: 5 Offered: Every Fall, Spring, and Summer
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. demonstrate appropriate communication and professional interactions with patients, families and other healthcare professionals in the inpatient setting. 2. apply knowledge and skills learned throughout the didactic year to demonstrate competency in advanced elicitation of history, communication, physical examination, and critical thinking skills in the inpatient hospital or long term care setting. 3. gather information, formulate differential diagnoses, and propose plans for the initial evaluation and management of patients with common inpatient Internal Medicine/Hospitalist/Geriatrics presentations. 4. develop evidencebased health promotion/disease prevention plans for patients of any age or gender as it relates to inpatient or long-term care. 5. describe the range of normal variation in the results of a complete blood count, blood smear, electrolyte panel, general chemistry panel, electrocardiogram, chest Xray, urinalysis, pulmonary function tests, and body fluid cell counts. 6. demonstrate proficiency in presenting a new patient case in a focused manner, chronologically developing the present illness, summarizing the pertinent positive and negative findings, differential diagnosis and plans for further testing and treatment.
