BIOL 778 - Elements of Research Computing (1 to 3 units) An overview of computational research, a skills-based introduction to programming and shell scripting for automating computational tasks. Select weekend workshops after attending the introductory lecture. 3 workshops = 1 unit, 6 workshops = 2 units, 9 workshops = 3 units.
(BIOL 778, CHE 778, GEOG 778, GRAD 778, NRES 778, and PSY 778 are cross-listed; credits may be earned in one of the six.)

Prerequisite(s): Degree-seeking graduate student. Class Note: Students who do not have a laptop may be able to borrow one with advance notice.
Grading Basis: Graded Offered: Every Fall and Spring
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. use Linux, R, Python, C++, Batch Processing techniques, depending on modules/workshops selected. 2. become versed in basic vocabulary and procedures associated with the tools listed in the course. 3. install, configure, use and obtain results from the tools associated with each module/workshop. 4. determine what types of computational tools might be useful in their own research.
