AGSC 620 - Principles of Irrigation Water Management

(3 units)
Efficient use of irrigation water applied to crops: irrigation water management, especially addressing field level challenges in arid and semi-arid regions. How information from weather and soil water sensing systems can be used to quantify irrigation amounts required to satisfy crop water requirements. Fundamental principles of pressurized irrigation systems and how to apply these principles to select the characteristics of their main components.

Maximum units a student may earn: 3

Grading Basis: Graded
Units of Lecture: 3
Offered: Every Spring

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. explain why irrigation water management is important.
2. discuss the main challenges faced by irrigated agriculture in arid and semi-arid areas.
3. analyze information from weather and soil water sensing systems to determine if a crop needs to be irrigated.
4. calculate the irrigation requirements of a crop using information from weather and soil water sensing systems.
5. apply basic principles behind the design of pressurized irrigation systems to select the characteristics of main components of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems.
6. implement efficient irrigation water management strategies as part of their research.
