SPAN 721 - Medieval and Early Renaissance Spanish Literature (3 units) Seminar on selected genres and authors of the Spanish Middle Ages and the period of the Catholic kings.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. articulate literary and political connections between the classical period and medieval Spain. 2. examine the Spanish medieval period and its relationship with medieval Western Europe and address such issues as race, class, gender, and national identity. 3. compare analytically the role of Islam, Judaism, and Christianity in medieval Spain; and also, the representation of such cultures in literary texts. 4. analyze and contrast differences among subcultures in the medieval Iberian Peninsula.
