SPAN 451 - Seminar in Hispanic Theoretical and Applied Linguistics

(3 units) CO11, CO13
Systematic examination of the Spanish language through theoretical linguistics (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics) and applied linguistics (variation, change, bilingualism, language acquisition, and history of the language). 

Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed; at least 3 courses from CO4-CO8 completed; Junior or Senior standing; SPAN 303 ; SPAN 350 .

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. define key terms and apply main concepts in Spanish phonology, phonetics, morphology, syntax, and semantics/pragmatics.
2. articulate linguistic concepts, language universals, and unique features of different varieties of Spanish to assess and analyze linguistics problems (CO1, CO11).
3. use the International Phonetic Alphabet to transcribe Spanish words at the phonetic and phonemic levels and draw syntactic trees representing superficial and deep structures.
4. assess the consequences of language contact for language change, language death, and language genesis.
5. demonstrate and synthesize advanced knowledge and skills of Spanish theoretical linguistics through class presentations and written materials (a research project and critical analysis of published studies). (CO1, CO3, CO13).
