SPAN 661 - History of the Spanish Language

History of Spanish from Latin to early Romance and then Modern Spanish focusing on cultural, literary and historical factors that have contributed to its evolution.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. identify and explain the evolution of Spanish from its origins to the present.
2. determine the influence of Latin and Basque on the birth and development of Old to Early Spanish.
3. discriminate the various processes of word formation and their effects of semantic change.
4. recognize the transformations that the Latin phonological system suffered through to pass to modern Spanish.
5. explain the relationship between the historical, social, and political events that shaped the Hispanic civilization and the development of the Spanish language.
6. demonstrate awareness of, and ability to analyze, the impact of global historical forces on the formation of the Spanish language.
