SPAN 445 - Second Language Acquisition

(3 units) CO13
This course surveys the field of second language acquisition with a focus on the most influential theories. Students will analyze data in order to deepen their understanding of the field.

Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed; at least 3 courses from CO4-CO8 completed; Junior or Senior standing; SPAN 303 . Recommended Preparation: SPAN 441  or SPAN 451 .

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. describe the historical progression of the field of SLA, especially as it pertains to research methods and approaches.
2. identify key terminology in the area of SLA research and how this terminology relates to research in learning contexts.
3. describe the issues and problems in current SLA research with examples drawn from multiple languages and global learning contexts via written essays and oral presentations.
4. use one’s own experience in their written research paper in order to deepen the understanding of second language acquisition research.
5. analyze real L2 data (including one’s own) from multiple perspectives to critically evaluate alternative interpretations of the data.
6. evaluate current hypotheses and develop a personal stance based on concrete data.
