SW 101 - Intro Social Work

(3 units)
Acquaints students with the values of and fields of practice within the social work profession. Emphasis on human diversity and generalist practice.

Grading Basis: Graded
Offered: Every Fall and Spring

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. identify and describe the various fields of practice within the social work profession.
2. distinguish between micro, mezzo, and macro practice.
3. identify and articulate the ethical principles expounded by NASW and the IFSW.
4. identify core personal values and how these values influence decisions, judgment and behaviors.
5. conduct searches for scholarly articles using electronic databases.
6. critically examine multiple dimensions of a social issue.
7. demonstrate ability to write using correct grammar, spelling and sentence structure.
8. define cultural humility, identify and articulate elements of one’s own culture.
9. define and distinguish between power, privilege, discrimination, and oppression.
10. identify and distinguish between various fields of practice within the social work profession.
11. define generalist practice, and accurately describe the roles and functions that constitute social work practice.
