ARA 226 - Middle Eastern Cultures through Arabic Calligraphy

Introduction to Arabic calligraphy in terms of culture, history, philosophy, and aesthetics. Includes Arabic calligraphy writing skills in the studio. (Taught in English. It is not necessary to have any prior understanding of Arabic.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. describe the connection between Arabic calligraphy art and its cultural and historical setting.
2. analyze the Arabic calligraphy artwork using their knowledge of aesthetic criteria and philosophical concepts.
3. create a presentation using Arabic calligraphy technique.
4. examine the cultural distinctions between the West and the East, as well as the historical and contemporary global relevance of continuity and change.
5. put current events into context and use historical, cultural, and literary knowledge to create oral and written research projects.
