CRJ 479 - Intimate Violence Across the Life Course

(3 units) CO10, CO13
Interpersonal violence occurs throughout the life course (childhood, adolescence, adulthood, older adulthood). Violence is impacted by and interacts with various social institutions such as school, the family, and the law. Topics include: child maltreatment and abuse, bullying, dating violence, domestic violence, and elderly abuse.

Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed; at least 3 courses from CO4-CO8 completed; Junior or Senior standing.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. demonstrate an understanding of historic and modern responses to gender violence focusing on Anglo-American law and processes.
2. demonstrate a basic understanding of violence and maltreatment in intimate relationships regarding the nature and changing aspects of power and vulnerability in intimate relationships across development.
3. critically evaluate definitions and laws of violence, including gender and gender violence and the role of law in society.
4. analyze the intersection, and interrelationship, of gender, class, age and disability, race, and ethnicity in regard to the topics of the course.
5. integrate effective communication and the critical use and analysis of information in class discussion and a variety of assignments, drawing on foundational knowledge from previous courses to apply to this course (e.g., law, investigation, charges, court).
