MUS 411 - Electronic and Digital Music Composition

(3 units) CO14
Computer music composition is a rapidly growing field, with new possibilities, technologies, approaches, styles, and aesthetics evolving at an unprecedented rate. This course will cover the rich history of electronic music as well as give the students an opportunity to compose in this genre. Students will compose two compositions and one will be performed at the semester end Composer’s Concert.

Prerequisite(s): Permission of instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. apply techniques of acousmatic composition, sound creation, realtime interaction, and algorithmic composition techniques.
2. compose two compositions using state-of-the-art hardware and software systems, including Pro Tools, Logic Pro X and Max/MSP.
3. present one of their two compositions in the semester end Student Composers’ Concert in Nightingale Concert Hall.
