Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. state a thesis about a problem in the history of political philosophy, and provide evidence and philosophical argument (including replies to counter-arguments) in defense of its conceptual and ethical presuppositions.
2. explain and interpret the ideas associated with historical schools, figures, and value theories in political philosophy.
3. distinguish better and worse reasoning, and recognize relevant logical relationships and patterns of inference in different political-philosophical theories pertaining to moral, social, economic, and political life.
4. show what is at stake in abstract debates about political philosophy and its history, and indicate how different positions in these debates help elucidate such ethically salient concepts as democracy, justice, liberty, equality, or the state.
