AGSC 413 - Introduction to Grazing Ecology & Management

(3 units)


Application of grazing ecology and management fundamentals to the interactions between livestock, wildlife, and plant communities.  Aspects of grazing livestock production operations directly related to grazing management will be covered.

A mix of in-person, field learning, and online learning materials and activities.  A MANDATORY multiple-day field trip is required. Students will be provided with a full-semester schedule detailing which days are field, in-person, and independent online learning.

Prerequisite(s): AGSC 100  & REM 241  

Grading Basis: Graded

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. describe livestock and wildlife diet preferences, grazing systems, and animal physiological needs.
2. apply knowledge of the grazing behavior and physiological needs of common breeds of livestock to given landscapes and livestock production scenarios.
3. perform and apply grazing calculations and analysis as a part of grazing management plans. 
4. craft grazing management plans that incorporate considerations for livestock health,  maintenance, or improvement of rangeland plant communities and wildlife habitat.
