ART 475 - History of Photography

(3 units) CO10, CO11, CO13
A global survey of the history of photography from proto-photography issues before the 19th century to 21st-century post-photography cases. The course addresses photography as a technological, social, and artistic medium, an experimental and cultural production, and a colonial and decolonial practice.

Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed; at least 3 courses from CO4-CO8 completed; Junior or Senior standing

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. explain critical visual, cultural, social, and technological aspects of photographic and artistic referential works.
2. use primary and secondary sources from interrelated disciplinary fields of Art History, History, Visual Culture, and Cultural Studies to critically discuss issues concerning race, social class, or gender in photography.
3. analyze academic arguments and apply art historical and visual culture analysis to propose personal analytical approaches and sound arguments concerning intersecting social and cultural forces and traditions.
4. articulate and evaluate connections among local, national, and international contexts.
5. integrate and synthesize sources, art works and disciplinary fields to discuss art works of photography considering historical and current issues of global interest and importance.
