ECON 442 - History of Economic Ideas (3 units) CO10, CO13 An overview of the history of economic thought, examining the contributions of leading economists and key schools of thought from classical economists to recent advances in economic science recognized by the Nobel Prize.
Maximum units a student may earn: 3
Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed; at least 3 courses from CO4-CO8 completed; Junior or Senior standing; ECON 102 ; ECON 103 .
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. identify and discuss the contributions of prominent economists, both historical and contemporary. 2. critically appraise these contributions, considering their relevance to economic and social challenges at the time of their writing and their lasting impact on the discipline. 3. identify recent contributions to the field of economics and discuss their significance to current understanding and practice. 4. explain the benefits of a market-based economy and identify areas where government intervention in the free market is likely to increase aggregate well-being. 5. clearly communicate their interpretation of significant economic ideas and theories, both in writing and orally.
