ENG 112A - English as a Second Language: Listening and Speaking

This course provides instruction in the acquisition of academic English language skills for non-native speakers with emphasis in listening and speaking. Topics may include lessons and practice in academic listening and notetaking, discussion techniques, and spontaneous and rehearsed oral presentations. Not intended for native English speakers.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. identify characteristics of spoken academic American English.
2. apply effective listening and note-taking strategies to comprehend and organize information.
3. practice public speaking skills for different audiences and contexts.
4. communicate with others using variations of American Englishes (i.e., academic, colloquial).
5. express ideas using pronunciation and articulation patterns (i.e., rhythm, stress, intonation) of spoken academic American English.
