GE 745 - Numerical Methods for Geomaterials

(3 units)
The mechanical response of geological materials is both complex and highly variable–the characteristics of the solid material, such as soil or rock, will greatly influence its mechanical properties while interaction with fluid can have a significant impact on the overall material behavior. In this class, we will discuss different numerical methods that can model the dynamic response of geological materials, and when it is appropriate to apply them.

Maximum units a student may earn: 3

Prerequisite(s): Prior coding experience, Recommended: MATH 283 , CEE 372

Grading Basis: Graded
Units of Lecture: 3
Offered: Every Spring - Odd Years

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. apply different numerical methods to solve partial differential equations applied to the dynamic response of geomaterials.
2. demonstrate an advanced level of competency in the area of computational geomechanics.
3. discuss the relationship of computational geomechanics in the broader context of the field and to their own research interests.
4. numerically model and simulate physical and natural phenomena specific to the transient response of geomaterials, such as rock and soil.
5. apply the different numerical methods they learn throughout the semester in computer code and learn how and when to use specific numerical approaches.
