GPH 333 - Physics of the Earth (4 units) Physical properties of the Earth, including mass, shape, gravity, internal structure, heat flow, and geomagnetism. Geophysical observations of the deformation and motion of the Earth’s crust and lithosphere in the context of plate tectonics.
Maximum units a student may earn: 4
Prerequisite(s): MATH 181 ; PHYS 151 or PHYS 180
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Units of Laboratory/Studio: 1 Offered: Every Spring
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. describe Earth’s gravity field and explain its relationship to Earth’s shape, rotation, and internal structure. 2. describe the fundamental properties of Earth’s magnetic field. 3. explain the propagation of seismic waves through the Earth and identify ways in which this is used to constrain Earth’s internal structure.
