University General Course Catalog 2026-2027

NRES 432 - Advanced Environmental Toxicology

(3 units)
Chemistry and toxicology of toxicants in the environment, particularly pesticides. Other topics include metals, food additives and hazardous wastes.

Prerequisite(s): CHEM 122A  and CHEM 122L  or CHEM 202 ; CHEM 220A  or CHEM 341 .

Grading Basis: Graded
Units of Lecture: 3
Offered: Every Fall

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. describe the exposure pathways and chemical characteristics of specific  contaminants and contaminant classes that are most influential to their environmental and in vivo fate.
2. summarize the major categories of toxicity responses and the contaminant classes associated  with those responses.
3. synthesize relevant concepts pertaining to the assessment of a specific ecosystem contamination  problem and apply methods to quantitatively estimate toxicity and risk.
4. identify gaps in understanding about the environmental fate and exposure consequences of an  emerging contaminant and propose research opportunities for addressing those gaps.
