NRES 440 - Wetland and Riparian Systems (3 units) Survey of core concepts and case studies related to the science and management of wetlands and riparian systems. Topics will include geography, hydrology, biogeochemistry, plants and wildlife, management, natural resource issues, restoration, and policy. Field labs will involve visits to nearby sites and demonstrations of field techniques. A term project will allow students to direct focus on a related topic of interest to them.

Prerequisite(s): NRES 217 OR BIOL 314 ; junior or senior standing

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. summarize important hydrological, ecological, biogeochemical processes. 2. identify the conditions that generate wetlands and the importance of wetlands and riparian zones in landscapes. 3. characterize various types of wetland and riparian systems as well as key traits associated with those systems. 4. discuss contemporary important topics related to both policy and scientific research related to wetland and riparian systems. 5. demonstrate sufficient proficiency on a specific topic related to the course such that they can proficiently teach their peers. 6. use a holistic perspective on wetland and riparian systems in appraising what factors and stakeholders may be important to understanding, managing, or restoring wetlands in various landscapes or conditions.
