SW 250 - Social Welfare History and Policy Practice (3 units) This course examines the historical development and evolution of social welfare policy in the United States. Students will analyze the connection between policy and practice, exploring how legislation and government structures shape the lived experiences of underserved populations and communities and the role of social workers in advocating for equitable and effective social welfare systems.

Prerequisite(s): SW 101 with a “C” or better.
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall and Spring
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. describe how major social welfare programs have changed over time, analyze current issues, and propose strategies for advocacy. 2. examine how social welfare policy has contributed to reducing, creating, or maintaining inequality and oppression among underserved populations throughout history. 3. analyze policies within their historical context and evaluate their impact on individuals and communities they aim to serve. 4. summarize the role of government in shaping social welfare policies and the social welfare state. 5. apply trauma-informed principles to analyze and propose modifications to existing social welfare policies.
