CAS 257 - Fundamentals of Behavioral Health (3 units) This course explores holistic well-being and its connection to behavioral health, emphasizing wellness-based approaches to support mental health and recovery. Students will gain insight into various roles in the behavioral health field, receive an introduction to the DSM-5, and learn practical strategies for promoting well-being in themselves and others.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. define key behavioral health conditions based on the DSM-5 criteria. 2. explain various wellness theories and practices and evaluate their impact on mental health and substance use conditions. 3. apply two wellness theories or practices to create a Personal Wellness Assessment. 4. describe at least two change theories and explain their relevance to behavioral health. 5. identify and explain the distinct roles and scope of practice for professional and peer behavioral health care providers.
