ART 214 - Introduction to Book Arts (3 units) CO7 Introduction to foundational book design, content creation, and mixed-media practices. Exploration of book structures, low-tech image-making, and narrative text generation, while discussions of historic and contemporary artists’ books and readings inform creative and technical outcomes. Students should expect to spend time outside of class working in the studio on designated projects.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. articulate key moments in the history of book arts and artists’ books, situating contemporary practice within historic contexts. 2. apply foundational bookmaking techniques including structure, binding, sequencing, and layout through interpretation of studio projects. 3. develop individual research presentations, analytical writing, and/or creative projects that analyze contemporary practices in the area of book arts. 4. discuss personal approaches to book arts through critique of themselves and others.
