We will also explore how differences in global views can influence the varying practices of nations. Biotechnology as it applies to medical research, forensics, manufacturing, and food production will be highlighted in this course.
Maximum units a student may earn: 3
Prerequisite(s): ENG 102 ; BIOL 190A
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. describe basic scientific concepts related to genetic engineering in order to develop core knowledge in this area and explain the application behind the science and the problem this application was originally intended to solve. 2. integrate and synthesize core knowledge and analyze open-ended problems or complex issues. 3. explain how local, national, and international influences have affected policies concerning science. 4. explain how biotechnology impacts societies. 5. articulate how biotechnology is perceived to address medical, agricultural, and environmental issues. 6. synthesize core knowledge to distinguish between sound and unsound interpretations of biotechnology and its impacts. 7. describe multiple world views and cultural interpretations. 8. articulate how their own cultural values and biases compare to others. 9. consider interdisciplinary perspectives (e.g. cultural, historical, scientific) in the analysis of current global attitudes to biotechnology.
