BIOT 350 - Ethics and Professionalism in Biotechnology (3 units) CO12 Provides formal training in literature searches, primary literature interpretation, science writing, workforce preparation, ethics and honesty in the workplace, and the resolution of ethical issues in a research environment.
Corequisite(s): BIOL 190A
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Spring
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. identify ethical concerns in research and intellectual contexts, including academic integrity, objective presentation of data, and comprehension of data outcomes. 2. identify the multiple ethical interests at stake in real-world situations and in practice. 3. engage in understanding the six pillars of Ethical Decision-making, Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Good Citizenship. 4. evaluate and recognize ethical issues in the life sciences, evaluate approaches and options, and apply them to normative standards. 5. evaluate and recognize professional opportunities within the scope of the student’s research area. 6. develop materials to obtain goals within the scope of chosen research area including internships and employment.
