ART 482 - Art of Mexico

(3 units) CO10, CO13
This course explores the art of Mexico from 1500 to the present, including late ancient art, New Spain Viceregal art, and modern and contemporary art in the historical territories of Mexico. The course considers a variety of production in painting, architecture, sculpture, photography, performance, and new media.

Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed; at least 3 courses from CO4-CO8 completed; Junior or Senior standing.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. explain critical visual, cultural, and social aspects of artistic referential works in different media and their cultural, social, and historical contexts. 
2. use primary and secondary sources from interrelated disciplinary fields of Art History, History, Visual Culture, and Cultural Studies to critically discuss issues concerning race, social class, or gender in works of art, architecture, and design produced in the historical territories of Mexico. 
3. analyze academic arguments and apply art historical and visual culture analysis to propose personal and critical approaches and sound arguments concerning intersecting social and cultural forces and traditions.
4. integrate and synthesize sources, art works and disciplinary fields to discuss art works of painting, architecture, sculpture, photography, performance, or new media in the historical territories of Mexico.
