PBH 420 - Commercial Determinants of Health

Survey of corporate marketing and lobbying practices that are harmful to health. Emphasis on politics, business, economics and law.

Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed, at least 3 courses from OC4-CO8 completed; Junior or Senior standing; PBH 101  and PBH 211

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. describe how corporate industries are a key driver of communicable (NCDs).
2. compare commercial determinants with other determinants of health, including biological, behavioral, social, political, cultural and environmental.
3. explain and compare corporate political activity among major industries of tobacco, alcohol, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and fossil fuels.
4. describe key principles of business, economics, politics and law involved in health determinants.
5. synthesize the principles of unhealthy commodities, industrial epidemics, and profit-driven diseases in relation to negative externalities harmful to health.
6. explore, compare and critique different approaches, frameworks and best practices to protect, manage, and mitigate corporate influence and conflicts of interests on efforts to curb the NCD epidemic.
7. explain the influence of non-state actor groups, networks, and coalitions related to NCD policy design, implementation and evaluation.
