REM 110 - Introduction to Wildland Ecology (3 units) CO9 Ecological examination of contemporary issues related to arid & semi-arid wildland ecosystems. Topics include ecology, ecological disturbance, ecosystem goods and services. Explore the application of critical thinking, science, and technology to understand how wildlands are managed. A mix of in-person, field learning, and online learning materials and activities. Students will be provided with a full-semester schedule detailing which days are field, in-person, and independent online learning.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. explain the concept of biogeography and summarize the characteristics of Western US wildland ecosystem types. 2. identify and explain the relationships among ecological components, interactions, and controls in a given ecological system. 3. explain the foundational tenets of critical thinking and the concept of “scientific integrity” and evaluate the credibility of sources of information. 4. explain the underlying ecological, social and economic challenges and opportunities of current wildland issues and ecosystem goods and services; and corresponding management approaches. 5. outline how to analyze a wildland issue or topic using critical thinking and credible sources of scientific information including literature, scientific datasets, GIS and other sources of information and technology.
